The spring season of performing arts programs conducted for Klamath Basin area youth by Northwest Youth Theatre are under way. Available are programs for first grade through high school students. Registration will be continued through the end of January. For registration information, call Lois Lents, executive director of Northwest Youth Theatre, at 891-0471. Northwest Youth Theater is a local not-for-profit performing arts group organized to serve students interested in expanding their knowledge and experience in the performing arts. Elementary school age children are invited to join The Broadway Brats as that group prepares its spring revue titled "Our World." The script for the show was written by Lents, who is the group's director, and the music has been chosen from a wide variety of music by popular composers.
Middle school and high school students are encouraged to participate in the group performing a play titled "The Incredible Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria" by award-winning playwright Jack Stokes. The Broadway Brats classes are held on Tuesday evenings. Performances will be held in a variety of venues during April and May. There will be two rehearsal groups of The Broadway Brats -The Little Brats for first through third grade students and The Big Brats for students in grades four through six. |
The class size for each group is limited to foster the establishment of friendships and to allow the students to work closely with the directors and receive individual attention, Lents said. "The Broadway Brats is open to all students who enjoy music and are interested in the idea of learning performance skills. Their performances are in musical revues, which give the students the opportunity to sing, learn and perform choreography and present speaking lines," she said.
The goal is for students to become comfortable in front of an audience and to help develop strong communications skills, which will benefit them in many aspects of their lives," she said.
Lents said the class size for the middle school and high school students is also limited. All of the students in the class will have speaking lines in the play. "This is a workshop approach to play production that allows a wide variety of students at different levels of experience and ability to come together and create a play," she said. "I have been involved in this type of teen production for more than 15 years and it is always gratifying to see the outstanding results in terms of the quality of the production and the friendships and good feelings that grow among cast members."
Rehearsals for all students involved in the programs are held at Rachel's School of Dance at 638 Klamath Ave.
